Which tarot cards indicate betrayal?
Ten of Swords – the Ten of Swords is the ultimate “stabbed in the back” card. Here, the figure lies face down, completely pinned down by those swords, a symbol of a complete betrayal or let down. A major blow that proves to be fatal to the relationship.
Nine of Swords – like the Ten of Swords, this image has a sword seemingly going through the figures’s back. Although it’s not actually piercing like the Ten of Swords, it’s still an image that invokes that feeling of being “stabbed in the back”. Notice also the image carved in the bed – one figure seems attacking another. Again, another symbol of treachery and hurting someone. The Nine of Swords is the kind of betrayal that wounds deeply. If you’ve ever had someone you love completely turn on you, then you know the feeling of this card.
Five of Swords – the Five of Swords symbolizes the “victory through deceit” or dishonesty. The ultimate double cross! While one figure seems to be winning, these are ill gotten gains that come from screwing people over.
Seven of Swords – like the Five of Swords, here we see a figure getting away with something. He’s being sneaky and perhaps taking things that don’t belong to him. This can symbolize a theft but also someone who does something behind your back. This is the kind of person who waits until the coast is clear – and then does his dirty deeds.
Three of Swords – the Three of Swords can also symbolize betrayal – especially the romantic kind. This is the partner who lies about what they did last night, the one who has a secret affair, or who dumps you cold completely out of the blue. Unfaithfulness. That kind of betrayal.
Nine of Wands – although the Swords seem to rule the whole betrayal thing, when the Nine of Wands comes up – put your shields up! This guy can warn of an impending treason or breach of trust. Guard your turf carefully now – and if someone feels like they are up to no good, trust that!
Note: Pay attention to the Swords Court figures – reversed King, Queen, Knight or Page of Swords could symbolize someone about to stab you in the back. While the Swords suit is the one I tend to look for when it comes to betrayal, other cards that could also symbolize treachery might be The Magician reversed (trickery, being fooled by someone), The Moon, or the Five of Cups.
