When I was little, every night I kneeled in front of my mother for nightly prayers with my siblings like a good Catholic girl. I always wished for the same thing: that we’d be rich. In my mind, money would have solved all of our problems.
I’m sure many other children who grew up without a lot also prayed for the same things. Those prayers were never answered.
So my wishes changed over the years. As I grew into a teenager with a lot of bad ideas, I suddenly stopped caring about my parents getting rich and started setting different intentions. Namely, moving to New York and dating musicians.
Those wishes did materialize.
Over the years, some of my intentions came together beautifully (great husband, pay off my mortgage early) while others kinda fell flat (stay in New York, become a makeup artist). It’s interesting how that works. Kismet? Karma? Bad wishing? Who knows? What’s more interesting to me is how the wishes continue to evolve over the years.
For example, my birthday came around about two weeks ago and suddenly there I was with tiramisu in front of me, ready to make my wish. This time, there was no focus on money or losing ten pounds or a trip to Tokyo. Instead, all I wanted was my tooth.
You see, I had a dental emergency the day before. A random cleaning and the dentist discovered that my dental work had become loose and the tooth underneath might need to be pulled. I shouldn’t have been surprised. I bit down on something hard a few weeks prior and had a searing pain in my molar. It calmed down a day later so I forgot about it.
I left that appointment in distress. The thought of losing that tooth put me in a funk. Not only was I worried about my vanity but also a possible $3K bill to boot. Not what I wanted for my birthday!
The next two days were an anxious nightmare. I couldn’t think of anything but that tooth and how badly I wanted it to stay.
So on my birthday that was my sole wish. I wanted to keep the tooth. It’s funny how that happens, right? You get older and none of that other crap matters. All you want is your health and a full set of chompers.
I put all of my energy into that request and blew out the candle.
The next day, it was off to the dentist with more fear than I’ve ever had before in my life (not exaggerating). But lo and behold, the tooth was saved! It might be the skill of my awesome dentist. Or it might be my sincere petition to the universe. Maybe a combo of the two. Whatever the case may be, I’m grinning ear to ear – and hoping that next year I can put something more delightful on my wishlist (trip to Hawaii)!
Wishing harder than I ever have in my life.
