The Hit List - You’ve changed

I wrote this little story on Twitter the other day, so I thought I’d share here on my blog.

A while back, I ran into someone I haven’t seen in a decade. She used to come to me for readings and we also floated about in the same circles. But then she disappeared and other than the occasional hey on social media, she was no longer part of my world.

We had a pleasant conversation, and I thought nothing more of it. Until a mutual friend reached out to tell me this person told them about our encounter and that “I changed” and “wasn’t the same.” This was stated as a negative, not a comment on the fabulous outfit I was wearing that day.

At first, I was taken aback – and kinda pissed. Changed? Most people say I’m the same person, a reliable Roger, even if we’ve been out of contact. (Also: how gross is it that these two worked up a whole conversation over this random run-in and felt this needed to be relayed back to me?)

But after much thought, I realized they were right. I HAD changed. I no longer had time for unhealthy dynamics with folks who sucked my energy dry. I had tighter boundaries, and that is what bothered this person.

They wanted instant access so they could dump on me, even though we’ve been out of contact for so long. But there was no way to get in. That door had been closed long ago.

When you decide to create healthy boundaries for yourself, people will get angry or hurt. They will accuse you of ‘changing’ as if that’s a bad thing. Do not take that bait. You have changed. And that’s a good thing.

As Yelawolf sings:

“I jump to the sky for my peopleI walk through the fire, I give love when it’s equalDon’t tell me not to complain about my money and fameWhen you come around and tellin’ me I changed
Damn right, I fuckin’ changed.”
