The past few weeks have been a lesson in slowing down. If you’ve been following my blog, you probably know I injured my ankle badly last month. I’m doing better, but this recovery is happening at tedious pace.
The other day, I ventured out for a solo grocery run. My foot was feeling a bit stronger so I was confident this would be no problem-o and fun. But a few steps out the door on hard concrete told me I wasn’t as well as I thought I was. Every time I put my foot down, I could feel tension on the top. This forced me to slow my roll.
Once I was at the store, I leaned on the cart for support and found myself slowing down even more. There were a few elderly folks circling around the produce. Some of them were moving faster than me. I tried to quicken my pace, but once again, the foot had other ideas.
This meant my adventure took a lot longer. Was that such a bad thing?
NOPE.
Because I was hoofing it in slo-mo, I had a chance to have a conversation with the butcher. We caught up on the latest grocery gossip, which turns out…there was plenty of that. I had missed out on a few things in my absence. Also, this new pace meant I wasn’t rushing through morning like usual. I didn’t have a choice. Frankly, I kinda liked that.
Truth be told, I’ve been slowing it down for some time now. In 2020, I made business decisions which created a lot more space in my days. I’ve also been doing a lot of retirement planning because I don’t want to work at a breakneck pace forever. I do want to retire.
In a way, I’m living my dream right now: chill mornings, writing for hours on end, and being more present than ever. Slowing down, whether by choice or force (or in my case, both) allows for breathing room and an appreciation for the present moment. You can’t have that if you’re flying by the seat of your yoga pants 24/7.
If I had to give my younger self advice, I’d say this: there is no hurry. It’s all an illusion. You have time. One day you won’t, and then you’ll understand why slowing down is so important. You won’t want to miss a thing.
