The Hit List - Then we make soup

The past week was an astrological hot mess. Throw in the midterm elections and the crash and burn of Twitter, and you have the perfect recipe for collective anxiety. So what do you do when the world is twisting and turning into 10,289 knots (and your stomach is too)? First, we take a deep breath. Then, we make soup.

Well, that’s what I do.

There is something about the act of creating a soupy, slurpy, nourishing meal that brings calm into my home…and my bones. Cutting the vegetables, skimming the water, and watching it bubble away on the old electric stove – it’s ritualistic and deeply satisfying. I may not be able to control what’s happening out there but I can set the dial to tranquil (and delicious) around here.

These are the soups I made this week:

Chickpea Stew With Orzo and Mustard Greens

White Borscht

These are two of my new faves – and the perfect antidote to scary pundits, worrisome politics, and cold weather. If you feel like current events (or anything for that matter) are making your epidermis squirm like a worm on a sidewalk on a rainy day, make soup. Trust me: it’s the right thing to do.
