The Hit List - The truth about book launches

This week my sixth publication, Tarot For Kids, debuted. It reached #1 in new releases for Children’s Mystery & Wonders Books and started garnering a few respectable reviews. Emails and videos came in from children who were loving the deck (sent in by appreciative parents who were able to unglue them from the screen).

It was a rousing success.

From the outside, it appears like a flawless execution of a book launch. What you don’t see are the dirty dishes in the sink, the piles of papers that need to be filed, my flabby stomach from not exercising, and the stiff neck muscles from being stuck in front of the computer.

You don’t see the cat pawing at me in desperation as I’m trying to get every duck in a row. Also: the disappointed faces when I say I don’t have time for this or that. Let’s not forget the sleepless nights, the jam-packed calendar, the missed private messages, the sweat, arthritic hands, and terrible posture from sitting too much with zero massages in months. On top of all this was a solid month of caregiving for a loved one, which, I can assure you, was no fun.

No one sees any of these things. They only see the images of a beautiful tarot deck floating through their social media feed.

Launching anything is a major production. It requires a team of people – and putting many things on hold while it’s all coming down to the deadline.

As I look around my home, I see the mess waiting for me. I refuse to step on the scale because I know it’s not going to be a number I like. Like a new mother, my body and home have taken a beating.

But the gorgeous baby that rests in my hands reminds me the hard labor was worth it all.
