The Moon is in Cancer today. It’s the natural placement for La Luna because she rules Cancer. This lunation is associated with home, family, and security – so it’s an ideal weekend to reflect on those themes. Especially the last part. As I always say about astrology: prepared, not scared!
The past few weeks have been…something else. That’s all I will say on that part. Suffice it to say, folks are tripping out. Can you blame them? When the world is unpredictable, and the economy seems to be on the verge of a major shift, it’s hard to rest easy. I’ve had a few sleepless nights myself.
However, I’m a pragmatic sort. I’ve experienced tumultuous times and financial hardship, so one thing I’ve learned: how to survive no matter what’s happening. When you’ve been poor, you don’t get to live on hope. You have to figure shit out.
Here are a few things to do right now to secure your fortress:
:: Get your passport updated as soon as possible. Don’t wait until the last minute. If fewer people are manning these agencies, it might take longer than usual. If you plan on traveling overseas, you need to get on this.
:: Always have a little cash on hand. I don’t keep much because I’m paranoid. But a few bills stashed away could come in handy in a pinch. Cash is always king. Even $50 is something.
:: Focus on becoming debt-free. That’s not possible for everyone. If you cannot pay your debts off, start cutting back on expenses. Put that extra cheddar away in an emergency fund.
:: Speaking of which, a small emergency fund is essential. Again, even a few bucks is better than nothing. Tuck that away, just in case.
:: Keep pantry staples on hand. I always have beans and rice because they’re cheap, nutritious, keep well, and I love eating them. Not sure what to do with them? Check out The Bean Book.
:: Make sure you have vitamins and over-the-counter medicines, including birth control, in your medicine cabinet. Ibuprofen, aspirin, allergy meds, antibiotic ointment, bandages, tweezers, and a first aid kit will set you up.
:: A stock of batteries, candles, flashlights, and matches is always smart. You never know when the power might go out. My grandmother always had candles lit during storms. It provided light and made the household feel peaceful.
:: I also keep fully charged battery packs for my cell phone in case the power goes out. I learned that the hard way once!
:: Freeze your credit report. You need to do this with all three. This will prevent someone from creating lines of credit in your name, something that can happen if there is a data leak.
:: Get smarter about protecting your privacy. Delete Me is a fantastic service that works to erase your digital footprint. Use my special referral code and save big bucks: Sign Up.
:: You should have an emergency plan – and everyone in the household should understand what to do. That means knowing where the fire exits are, who handles the pets, etc.
:: Have a “go bag” for every household member. If there is a fire or other emergency, you must ensure you have essentials. Here is a helpful post on what to include in your bag. (Fun fact: I had an irrational fear of fire when I was a kid, so I always had a little bag stashed in the closet just in case I had to jump out the window and escape.)
:: Lastly, purchase a fire and waterproof safe. Fill it with the following items:
Birth, marriage, and divorce certificates
A copy of your Social Security report
Passports
Deed to your house
Deed to your vehicles
Will, power of attorney, medical power of attorney
Insurance information (home, vehicle, life, etc)
Look, there are many things you cannot control. However, there are a few things you can do to secure your fortress against scary shit. While these tips may not change the world, they can make you feel more safe when life is anything but.
