My husband and I have done many a road trip over the years. We’re hard core – preferring to drive through the night in many cases. We can be on the road for hours without too many problems.
Well, that WAS the case.
As we drove to Detroit the other day, there were a few more pit stops needed. Not for the bathroom, mind you. We’re like camels in the bladder department. Instead, it was for our backs and hips. The six-hour drive was killing us. Although I am a yogi an he practices TaiChi, we were both pretty busted. Our bodies NEEDED those stretch breaks.
The Universe sent us a clear message: we’re getting old.
Instead of rocking it out like some sort of Mad Max road warrior, we’re more like Sad Sacks road worriers. Worried we’re going to wrench our backs if we try to make this journey like we’re still in our thirties.
It’s funny how things like this sneak up on you. I’d like to think I’m forever young and a total badass but now? I’ve got a “bad ass” as in a wonky hip. My road trips must accommodate this new reality.
You know what though? It’s not so bad. It may take us longer to get where we need to go but that means more time with my husband. Because on the other side of getting old is the knowledge that our time together is shorter with each passing year. Slowing down and savoring the journey can be divine.
Don’t hurry through life, folks. Take it easy. Slow down. Enjoy the ride.
