The Hit List - Why is patience the hardest lesson?

So many things in life don’t go as planned. Or they do…but it takes way longer than expected. Is it just me – or is it the way things are? I know patience is a virtue but darn it…why is it so hard to actually be patient?

I’ve explored this in-depth as I continue to recuperate from my fall. I’ve hurt myself before but usually, bounce back. Not this time. I’ve had to rely on others and learn to move at a drunken snail’s pace.

Part of it is my age. The other part is how severe the sprain was – this is not as simple as a little twist. My bruising is almost gone but it took five weeks for that.

I found myself doing the thing I shouldn’t when life isn’t going according to my plan: searching the web to find timelines on how long it generally takes to heal from a sprain. Naturally, the information is a mixed bag of hopeful and bummer. Turns out I can heal in a month…or much longer.

I’ve even read it may take a full year. YIKES.

Now that a month has passed, I see it’s not happening for me yet. Although there are signs of improvement, the Universe says: be patient.

So here I sit, with my brace on, resting up and pondering my relationship with patience. I’ve had plenty of moments when I was content to bide my time so I know I can do it. But those times were centered around GOOD THINGS. Isn’t it funny how easy it is to chill out when you know you’re getting the outcome you want? That’s not the case when you’re healing or in a situation you despise.

Sigh.

It’s no fun, that’s for sure. But it is part of life. Because you can’t sit around with a halo of patience when life is groovy and think you’ve aced the exam. The real test comes when you’re in the thick of it, fail a few times, and still hang in there. That’s when you know patience intimately.

This ridiculous picture is my son’s cat doing her thing.
