The Hit List - Out with the old...reluctantly

I’m frugal. While I have been known to splurge on books, good food, and lipstick, I’m more conservative with other things. Take my car, for example. It’s over twenty years old and beginning to rust. It has dents, dings, and stains. But it runs perfectly, so I have no desire to replace it. I prefer to drive it until it dies.

I’m the same way with shoes and clothes. I have t-shirts that are older than my car (my beloved thirty-something-year-old Vault t-shirt will never be tossed out!). Wearing it out means more than one thing in my world.

But this past month, things began to break down. Although I attempted to blame the eclipse and full moon, the truth was that things were getting old. My shoes started to hurt my feet, so new Birkenstocks were in order. My check engine light came on. A new gas cap is ordered. Thankfully, I don’t need to get a new car…yet. (I did start researching my options, just in case.)

Then, the appliances went haywire, beginning with the twenty-plus-year-old fridge in our tenant’s apartment. Only two weeks later, my washing machine gave me the dreaded F1 code, which I could not successfully bypass. The door was locked with freshly washed clothes inside, and the only way to open it was to pry it with a long screwdriver. Our new washer and drying will arrive on Monday. Sigh.

I guess I shouldn’t complain. Everything mentioned has had a good run. Even the shoes. (I haven’t replaced my Birkenstocks in over five years.) Things break down. It’s a fact of life.

Heck, even parts of me are wearing out. I’ve been on the planet for almost sixty years…so is it any surprise that I shuffle in the morning or discover new wrinkles and saggy spots every other day? I’m unsure how long until it’s my turn to be given the boot. But until that time comes, you’ll find me driving my late-model car with the rust spots in my old t-shirt and brand-new shoes.
