The other day, I asked this question on my private Facebook page:
Do you think it’s possible to live without regrets?
The answers ranged from an emphatic yes or no to philosophical or personal.
My friend, Bonnie Cehovet, said this: “At some point in our lives, most of us may have a regret or two, but we must learn from them, not allow them to take over our lives.”
Wise words.
Certainly, I have a few regrets of my own. They are mostly stupid things that messed up my life temporarily – or cruel things that caused harm to someone else. (The latter always bothers me more than anything I do to myself. I hate hurting anyone, ever.)
While I don’t sit around wallowing in the past, I do remember those incidents with great lucidity. It’s amazing how the pain from days gone by still has that sting when we recall those events.
But I’ve learned A LOT from those errors.
I’ve learned to think before I open up my mouth (and am learning to think before I type).
I’ve learned that it’s better to trust my instincts 100%, even if it makes other people uncomfortable or mad.
I’ve learned to be honest about my feelings but to do so with tact.
I’ve learned that a cruel joke leaves a scar.
I’ve learned not to be impulsive in love (but you can still be in-the-moment).
I’ve learned that boundaries are essential to my well-being.
I’ve learned to be way more careful about the company I keep.
I’ve learned that cats can and will break precious things (like my doll in the picture above.)
I’ve learned that other people needn’t color my experience nor affect my actions.
I’ve learned that boredom gets me in trouble (hence, I stay busy).
I’ve learned that other people’s drama is not any of my business.
I’ve learned that it’s okay to run with the pack from time to time but lone wolf mode suits my solitary nature better.
I’ve learned to say yes and to say no.
I’ve learned that loved ones need attention and I need my space (it’s a tricky balance that requires a lot of communication).
I’ve learned to love, better. To care more. To be more present.
And I’ll keep learning.
Because I don’t want a life that is dull, bland, or too cautious. Which means I may still make mistakes.
And that’s okay because I don’t regret my regrets.
That’s me and TaoZen getting ready to get our yoga on!
