The Hit List - Mother love

They say that the strongest love is a mother’s love. I don’t know about that because watching my daughter fall in love has been having a much more magical effect on her than any mom lovin’ I’ve been delivering over the years.

It’s been a joy to witness this unfolding. I swoon over whatever details she divulges. Heck, I met the chap and he is the first guy to get my mom seal of approval. I so, so want this for her. Yet part of me is absolutely terrified.

Because with love comes risk and no parent ever wants to see their child hurt.

But also, there’s another part to this. On some level my worries stem from the fact that I’ve made some rather disastrous choices in my own past. Crazy bad boy musicians have always been my catnip. Oh, and I’m impulsive as can be when it comes to romance. I like to blame that Aries on the 7th house cusp astrology stuff.

My daughter is not like that. She’s mature. Wise. Cautious with her heart.

I have to sit back and trust that no matter what happens, she’ll figure out what to do. She doesn’t need my guidance nor my anxiety. This isn’t my story. Instead, she just needs to take the plunge and trust her own inner wisdom.

I always say that love carries a risk. There is always the risk that someone will be hurt. But you must go in anyways, with an open heart, trusting that the experience will help you grow. If things fall apart, you must go at it again. And again. Because taking the risk to love is better than not taking it at all.

As I type this, she’s gearing up to spend another weekend with her beau, blissful and happier than I’ve ever seen her. Meanwhile, my mom duties are probably going to be transferred to my aging cat, who has been having a few issues. I can put my energy there instead.

Because I have a feeling that the kid is going to be alright.
