I was grousing with my daughter about a so-called friend who seemed to delight in taking veiled passive-aggressive potshots at me. It was one of those situations where I couldn’t call her out. She had too many folks fawning over her, so I had to let it go.
“She’s a pick-me.” my daughter said. I didn’t understand what she meant, so she elaborated: “A pick-me is usually a woman who throws other women under the bus to seek approval from men. It’s not limited to men, however. They can be seeking approval in other ways. But generally, it’s internalized misogyny.”
Damn. I chalked it up to plain old insecurity…but when you put it like that…it’s a perfect term for this icky behavior. I love slang, so I added “pick-me” to my lexicon, right next to “frenemy,” another word I learned from my daughter many years ago.
She keeps me up-to-date on all this slang stuff. It’s one of the reasons why I like hanging out with her and other young folks her age. Millennials have a clever way with words.
When I mentioned this to her, she said “Millennials have a word for everything, kind of like Germans who have words such as backpfeifengesicht (which means punchable face, basically).” Ha ha!
My son is currently in Germany touring with a band. He’s a millennial, too. I wonder what new slang he might learn. Do I need to start speaking German so I can have a word for everything? Well, that’s a bit too ambitious.
Instead, I’ll refer to my millennial kids (who are not kids) when I’m at a loss for the right bon mot. However, as they become official middle-agers, their claim to slang fame may be on the way out. I’m looking to you, Gen Z and Alpha, and whatever comes next to keep me current. Please pick me before I become too square! (Does anyone use square anymore?)
xo
Theresa
