While running errands with my husband, we found ourselves musing about the things that give us joy these days: elegant dinners, interesting television shows, long bike rides, and renovating the house. We also chatted about what keeps us up at night. Namely, health concerns and retirement.
This is a far cry from how we got our kicks back in the day when smoky bars, loud music, and late nights were our jam. Sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll, baby! Sleep? Who needed that when you were young and fabulous? Not us!
But now, if I’m not in bed by 10 o’clock, I’m the walking dead. Sleep might be my favorite thing these days. Who’d a thunk Miss Patent Leather Hot Pants would one day be extolling the virtues of yoga pants and sleep aids? It’s certainly something I never dreamt I’d be doing. But middle age has defo changed my focus. (Plus I do not look good in hot pants anymore. Trust me on that one.)
Isn’t it funny how priorities and the things that make you happy shift when getting older? I am endlessly fascinated and amused by how different I am these days. Of course, it also makes me wonder: if this is what I’m grooving to in middle age, how the hell am I going to get my jollies when I’m officially a senior? Spoiling a grandkid? Naps in the afternoon? Newfound hobbies such as needlepoint or skydiving? (Probably not either of those!)
I have no idea what’s going to make me swoon in the future. I guess I’ll find out when I get there. Which isn’t that far away.
