My mother loved to regale us with the tale of how she met my father. They were on dates with other people (both duds, according to her) at a local tavern when they glanced at each other across the bar. She was struck by his steel-blue eyes (I inherited those), and he was instantly smitten with her jet-black hair piled on top of her head in a thick mass of curls. It was love at first sight.
They ditched their dates and were inseparable for the rest of their lives.
Swoon.
My parents were complicated people, but their love wasn’t. Their story taught me to believe in love at first sight. I’ve been fortunate enough to experience it myself.
Not just with my husband (he’s a looker, so it’s easy to understand why I fell hard the first time I laid eyes on him) but also with my children, best friend, and Tarot. These are the relationships that have endured the test of time. I never get tired of being with any of them.
Love is grand, and sometimes, it’s fast and furious. When it happens like that, it feels like the Universe is opening up, time stops, and you’re in the presence of something greater than yourself. You are. It’s the Universe reflecting back your capacity to love deeply. You are love and the rest is a mirror.
