As I scrolled through my Instagram feed one day, I paused to look at a pic of a group of friends frolicking by the ocean. They looked like they were having the best time. Don’t those beach party things always look like a blast? I had been invited to this summer shindig but quietly declined.
The picture may have been the epitome of fun, but I was immersed in JOMO: the joy of missing out.
You probably heard of the opposite: FOMO. You know: the “fear of missing out?” The dictionary describes this as “anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on a social media website.”
I’ve rarely get that vibe.
Reason why: I’m living my life on my terms and I won’t commit to anything that doesn’t feel 100% interesting to me, no matter how much fun it may seem or who’s involved. I know who I am and what I like – and that’s the first step to avoiding “fear of missing out.”
My best life doesn’t mean:
Endless vacations in sunny spots (I hate the beach)
Bragging about six figures (my income is no one’s business)
Walking on coals or other daring feats (not into that kind of risks)
Being a certain size (I’m long over that goal)
Doing crow pose (soooo uninterested)
That’s fine for some people and I applaud that all the way. But ‘m never too impressed by “lifestyle” brands or folks. Meh. My best life looks more like this:
Being debt-free
Good sleep
Traveling to places that don’t make me sweat
Whipping up luxe meals and treats (latest concoction: chocolate Rice Krispie Squares with a dark chocolate ganache and smoked sea salt flakes)
Time spent with my husband and children
Conversations about Game of Thrones facts and theories.
That may seem rather basic to some but frankly, I’m not concerned with creating envy in anyone. I’m just doing my thing – and hope other people have JOMO when they glimpse at my world.
When you’re focused on what brings you pleasure, you never have to worry about FOMO. Instead, you can sit back, scroll past those glossy air-brushed pictures and feel happy or those folks but also thrilled that you’re not participating in anything but the stuff you really, truly enjoy.
