The Hit List - It’s in my bag

We were standing in line at the Italian deli, me on my crutches with a sturdy ankle splint and my son, patiently waiting on his sandwich of mortadella and capicola. His brows were furrowed and jaw clenched. You didn’t need to be psychic to see something was bothering him.

So I did what I always do: I pulled my baby tarot deck out of my bag and did some on-the-spot readings. I always carry this little deck with me. It’s traveled all over the country and been in many hands. Sometimes I’ve pulled it out for random folks on subways or buses. It always makes people smile – and feel better.

I’m not a big woman but I do carry a large bag. A few things are with me at all times: lip balm, my wallet (currently a tiger print beauty), tissues, pens, tiny notebook, iPhone, floss, toothpicks, dental mints…and the little tarot deck.

On occasion, I’ll switch to a smaller purse but it never lasts long. I feel naked if I can’t have all my regular stuff with me on the go. What if something happens? For example, what if I have a fleck of greenery stuck in my front teeth from lunch? Or what if there’s a tarot emergency? You never know when you’ll need that toothpick or a deck of cards.

It’s strange when I see other people with teeny bags. What could they possibly have with them? And what if they need a tissue but there’s no room in there? Heck, I might not want to share mine if they get a case of the sniffles. Then what?

I’m also concerned when I see someone lugging a big backpack stuffed to the brim. How can they find the floss? Is there even any in there?

Years ago, I had the perfect purse. It was a Tommy Hilfiger messenger bag. The size was great – roomy but not too large, sturdy canvas with a cute print of three women on the front and hot pink trim on the edges. I used that bag to death until it became shabby. I still think about it. Occasionally I search for a replacement but so far, I’ve come up short. No other purse has ever come close to being as great. Sigh.

The man behind the deli counter called my son’s name and handed over the sandwich. I don’t know if the tarot reading brought a smile on his face or if the sandwich did, but I was glad to see he seemed better. As I tucked the deck back into my bag, I hoped it might be the former.
