the impossible bridge

Last week, I was on a magical birthday vacation, complete with decadent dinners and visits with friends both old and new (and all dear).  I’m still buzzing from all that goodness.

Part of our journey was driving from Los Angeles to San Francisco, a scenic route with mountains, deserts and…one big ole bridge: the Bay Bridge, which connects San Francisco and Oakland.  This is one of the biggest bridges in the United States and going over that thing is always kind of an awe-inducing experience.

As we drove over it this time, my husband remarked “I wonder who got the idea to create this bridge.  Imagine how impossible that may have seemed way back then.”

We pondered that for a while as we crossed over into the city.

Think about that for a minute: at one point, this may have seemed inconceivable.  A bridge over the ocean?  The thought of even constructing that seems overwhelming to me.

But someone went right ahead and built it.  (Thank you Ralph Modjeski for the engineering.)

There are many things that once seemed impossible yet some daring soul went ahead and did it anyways, despite the odds:

The Wright Brothers flew the first airplane.

Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery.

Helen Keller was an author, lecturer and activist – even though she was deaf and blind.

Imagine if one of these people kicked back and said “Well, that looks too hard…guess I’ll give up.”

Giving up is boring as hell and it’s a cop out.

What seems impossible in your life?

Do you think it’s too hard to run your own business?

Too difficult to find a good mate?

Too challenging to stick to your diet and exercise regime?

Too rough to cook a good meal for your family every night?

A pain to  get up on time or follow through on your promises?

Many of these things are things that we can do.  Yet we don’t.  We make excuses.  We throw in the damn towel and then bitch about how crappy things are.

We’re better than that.  We’re building rockets to the moon and robots, for chrissakes.

So stop with the excuses and just start now.

Build.

Dream.

DO IT.

Live like you frigging mean it.

You don’t have to be a bridge builder or a self proclaimed Emperor to engineer a remarkable life (or to get off your ass and exercise).

Make that so-called impossible shizz your bitch. Everything is possible.

That’s me and my man, hitting that road hard.  We’re road warriors like that.
