I’ll never forget her face.
We were shopping for cloth at a local department store. Housewares and sewing supplies were located in the basement, so down we went. The woman at the counter kept her head down as she cut the pretty flowery cotton into large rectangles before folding them neatly. When she finally looked up, she had a wan smile on her face…and a black eye. I could feel her sadness, but I didn’t know what to say. I stammered a weak thank you and slunk off to the cashier.
That wasn’t the first or last time I encountered someone who had been abused. In fact, it has happened far more times than I can count. Most of those people escaped and rebuilt their lives. Some are still in those situations for reasons too complex to get into here.
I have no idea about that woman in the department store because I never went there again, and it closed a long time ago.
Even so, I can still see her face to this day.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Here’s something I wrote on Instagram:
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence: 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. This includes a range of behaviors (e.g., slapping, shoving, pushing) and, in some cases, might not be considered “domestic violence.”
When you consider that many do not report such incidents, the numbers are probably worse.
Some victims lack the resources and support to leave. Others are too scared. This makes it less likely we have accurate statistics.
Everyone deserves to be safe, respected, and free from abuse.
If you or someone you know are a victim of domestic violence, here are some resources:
- National Domestic Violence Hotline: https://www.thehotline.org
- 1-800-799-SAFE (3224)
- National Coalition Against Domestic Violence: https://ncadv.org
Please keep in mind that abuse isn’t always obvious, like a black eye. Emotional, financial, and sexual abuse cause deep scars, too, even if we can’t “see” them. Also, domestic violence can happen to anyone, regardless of your gender, age, race, income, education, spiritual beliefs, or sexual identity.
It’s important that we draw attention to domestic violence, strengthen laws, and create more support for victims. Not just this month but year-round.
