The alarm goes off. I’ve been awake for a bit before that even happens because my inner clock likes to be early. Plus, I’m paranoid about oversleeping. Back in the day, I used to leap out of bed as soon as the bell struck. These days, not so much.
My body has different ideas. It’s not that I want to stay in bed. That’s not how I’m wired. I WANT to get going, but I’m stiffer than a starched shirt in the morning so it takes time.
Once I’m out of my fortress of blankets and pillows, I am shuffling out of the bedroom to start the computer, brush my teeth, and so on. It takes me about thirty minutes before I’m operational. Add another hour before my body unstiffens and stops hurting.
As I often say to my husband, “getting old is for the birds!”
It used to be that shuffling had a whole different meaning in my life. It meant shuffling my beloved Tarot cards, something I still do every day. But now, even that is slower than it used to be.
It’s funny how the body betrays you. Just as I began feeling as if I was “in my prime,” my protoplasm said, “haha, not so fast!” And yeah…I’m not so fast anymore.
While it’s easy to lament the current state of bodily affairs, the alternative is worse. I’m grateful every day to be alive. I don’t mind slowing down either. I spent many years in warp-speed mode, so it’s okay to take a chill approach as I eye up retirement (only a few years away).
Slowing down means being in the moment, utterly present, instead of whirling around like an out-of-control top. It means I’m here, still here, still breathing. And still shuffling my feet…and my cards.
