The sky was overcast, but there was enough sun to coax me outside. I texted my son and made plans for a brisk walk followed by a visit to the local taco truck. Off we went, sprinting along with the anticipation of the treats that awaited us, only to feel a slight drizzle a few blocks into our adventure. I should have paid more attention to the gray skies.
I didn’t bring an umbrella because I assumed the weather was beautiful. We turned back and headed for the car just in time as the rain became steady. Sometimes, when a storm presents itself, it’s best to shift gears rather than carry on as usual.
The election has come and gone. Truthfully, it felt like a slap on the face with a wet towel. A wake-up call for sure. I had grand plans before that reality check. My fast-track retirement plan is now uncertain. Everything must be reviewed, and new preparations must be drawn up. Like the weather, it’s best to be prepared, sometimes over-prepared, when you see the possibility of a storm.
So what are some of the things I’m going to do?
Simple.
:: Purchase less. I don’t need to contribute to the economy by buying shit I don’t need. Time to scale back.
:: Spend more money with businesses aligned with my ethics and less with those not.
:: Donate to good causes that support my ethics. Planned Parenthood, World Central Kitchen, ACLU, and Greg Palast are all on my list of recurring donations.
:: Update my retirement accounts and focus on stable, conservative investments.
:: Drive the ugly old car until it dies.
:: Live debt-free. This is something I’ve practiced for years. I highly recommend getting debt-free as soon as possible. It frees you in more ways than you can imagine.
:: Careful daily budgeting. I’ve got three planets in Virgo, so I’m a pro at this.
:: Knuckle down on spiritual and creative practices. If there is anything I need now, it’s this. It will keep me sane.
:: Read all the books.
:: Turn off the news. Read reliable sources such as Reuters, AP, and the BBC. Limit consumption of social media (too negative).
:: Stock up on meds and necessities. I’m actually really good at this – which is why I went through the pandemic without a problem. I always have a stash of the things that I need. I learned this during times in my life when I’ve been poor.
:: Stick to masking and social distancing. Work out more. Avoid booze and overconsumption of junk food. Health is my greatest currency, and I will not take risks now, especially with the ACA in a precarious place.
:: Set strict boundaries with folks who negate my existence and vote against vulnerable people. If they cannot be empathic, I can no longer give them a free pass. I deserve a safe space.
:: Lastly, writing, writing, and more writing. I’m working on my next book and will keep my head there rather than doomscrolling.
Although this may seem extreme or reactionary, I’ve been through stormy times before. I don’t need a meteorologist to tell me that I need to bring an umbrella when the sky is gray. The forecast has changed. I know what to do. The only plan that won’t change: tacos. I can find my way to that truck no matter the weather.
