The Hit List - Bad Feelings

“I have a bad feeling about this. When I get that vibe, I’m usually right.” I said.

He looked at me, cocked an eyebrow, and snorted. “Pfft…you’re not always right. No one is.” The set of his jaw told me there was no point in trying to convince him. He was going to prove me wrong.

But a few months later, I heard through the grapevine that I was on the money. I didn’t gloat or start in with the old “I told ya so,” even though it was tempting. Instead, I felt the same whenever this happens: I wish that person would have listened to me.

Perhaps he thought I was being a Negative Nelly. Or maybe too cautious. Neither was the case. I’m finely tuned into my instincts, especially when something or someone feels “bad” or “off.” I never ignore this. The few times I did, I learned the hard way – and I’m not someone who enjoys the School of Stupid Moves and Foolish Risks.

Listening to those “bad feelings” has kept me out of danger and drama on many occasions. I’ve avoided murderous types, scams, and dubious partnerships.

How did I learn to tune into this “ratched radar?” Simple. I grew up around violence and deception so I know the vibe intimately. Many other intuitive people I’ve talked to report the same thing – when you’re in certain situations early on, you quickly learn how to spot the problem so you stay out of the line of fire. Picking up on this vibe also means I have to be rude on occasion. (Psst…I have zero problems being the bitch when something feels sketchy.)

We live in a society that teaches us to be “nice,” even when we get those intuitive hits that say “run.” In “The Gift of Fear” author Gavin DeBecker says we need to listen to our instincts and act quickly when we sense someone means us harm. This means dropping the polite act and getting the hell out of that situation. I think you can apply this wisdom to any situation that feels funky. After all, sometimes the danger isn’t physical.

How do you know if that “bad feeling” is a psychic red flag – or something else?

You cannot explain it but you just “know.” For me, I feel unease in the pit of my stomach and a sudden overwhelming feeling of dread. Other people report feeling the “hair stand up on the back of their necks” or a flash of fear that seems sudden or random. Sometimes you’re not sure if you’re picking up on something or being judge-y either.  And there are times when you’re gonna be wrong (like the time I thought that nice man offering to help me change a flat tire was a creep – he was really just a kind person). But on those times when you’re dead on, you’ll be glad you listened.
