So today is my birthday. I’m officially 57 – and only 8 years away from retirement. Unless I happen to hang out for two more years or so. Who knows? But this what I do know from being on the planet for 57 years:
- Getting older is a gift. Be grateful to still be here.
- Gray hair, don’t care. Dyeing is a hassle I got rid of a long time ago. You don’t need to dye yours unless you want to.
- If your clothes don’t fit your body any longer, get them tailored or get new things that fit rather than trying to squeeze into those size 2 hot pants you wore in 1989.
- Friendship becomes more important as you get older. Keep your good pals close.
- BUT some people need to go, too. Examine who you allow in your orbit. Are they kind? Can they be trusted? Do not hesitate to let some folks go. It will create more space for the ones you love.
- Marriage or any sort of partnership requires effort. Never take your important people for granted.
- Cake is great any day of the week.
- Skincare routines make you feel – and look – great. This is an indulgence worth splurging on.
- Have red lipstick handy at all times. It wakes up your face.
- A couple of extra pounds means you’ve enjoyed your life. Don’t judge yourself so harshly.
- Don’t go out in the sun too much. If you do, sunscreen is a must.
- Stereotypes are just that. Break them often.
- Just because you’re a certain age doesn’t mean you have to cut your hair off. Let it run wild if you feel. Or shave it off if that’s your jam. There are no hair rules for older people.
- Flowers will always make you feel good. Keep some in your home as often as possible.
- Your relationship with your children is precious. It’s never too late to fix that either.
- Forgive when you can. When you can’t, that’s okay too. Some situations are unforgivable.
- It’s never too late to wear that outrageous sequined robe you admired. (Yes, it has been purchased.)
- You can never have enough books.
- Comfortable shoes can still be cute.
- Always give your mailman a Christmas gift. They deserve it.
- Treat your employees or people you hire well. Tip them.
- Make friends with people who come from different backgrounds than yours. You’ll learn something.
- Support small businesses. The locals need your dollar bills as much as the big guys do. Maybe more.
- If you have a platform, use it to elevate marginalized voices as much as possible. Put the spotlight on BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities often.
- Music in the background from the time you wake up until the time you hit the hay is the right thing to do.
- Learn new recipes and cook at home. It’s cheaper and FUN.
- Lay off the booze. You won’t sleep as well if you take a nip once you’re a certain age. Trust me on that.
- Speaking of sleep – get some. Eight hours a night is ideal.
- Exercise every day. Even dancing around the room counts!
- You don’t have to document every moment on social media. In fact, it’s better to show much, much less.
- Good gossip is life. Malicious gossip is NOT. There is a huge difference.
- Don’t be jealous of other people’s success. Let it motivate you to rise up higher.
- Hide your candy stash from prying eyes.
- Cats. That’s all.
- Always have a few juicy stories you keep to yourself.
- Get your will done. Don’t put this off any longer. Your family will be grateful.
- RSVP no to pity parties. Trust me, you don’t want to attend those.
- Learn to keep some of your opinions to yourself – especially when it comes to your adult children.
- Keep your boundaries high.
- You don’t have to explain yourself to some people. That only opens the door for manipulative types to bargain with you.
- No one needs a partner to be happy. The wrong one will make you miserable.
- Speaking of which: learn to enjoy your own company. Being alone doesn’t mean being lonely.
- Do not fret about folks unfollowing or unfriending you. People are free to go. It’s all good.
- If you cannot travel, that doesn’t mean your world will be small. There are plenty of ways to see the world.
- Tell the truth, even if it makes you unpopular.
- It’s never too late to go back and watch The Sopranos or The Wire. You should do that this weekend.
- Go on the hunt for new music as often as possible. Think about this: there is so much beautiful music you haven’t discovered and never will. Find as much as you can.
- Hang out with young folks. They’ll keep you young. Hang out with elders. They’ll wise you up.
- Free up your time as much as you can. Be greedy with your time – you only have so much. Why give it away to low-rent activities or people?
- Vitamins are better in gummy form.
- What were your favorite pastimes when you were a kid? Do them now.
- Put your cell phone down and look up at the sky. Don’t miss the beauty in front of you because you’re too busy doomscrolling.
- Quiet time every day will restore your sense of balance.
- Find a spiritual practice you like. Meditate, pray, visit a temple, throw offerings into the ocean – it will help you connect to something greater than yourself.
- Be considerate of other people.
- Give to worthy causes as often as you can. There are many to choose from. (Psst…you don’t have to give money. You can volunteer your time, too.)
- Love your life and yourself. You only have one you and one life. Let love rule.
