Talkin’ Tarot With is a monthly feature designed to introduce my readers to different tarot readers from our wonderfully diverse community! Each month, I’ll be asking various tarot readers 3 questions about their tarot philosophy and style, plus pointing you to their websites and blogs so that you can learn more about them! I like to hand pick tarot readers that I feel are talented and interesting.
This month, I’ve changed my format just a little bit for my very special guests, Ruth Ann and Wald Amberstone. I’ll be asking 4 questions instead of the usual 3 – and these questions are specially tailored to them.
The Amberstones really don’t need an introduction. Most of us know them as the godparents of modern Tarot. The Amberstones are the cofounders of The Tarot School which offers a correspondence course and many other educational tools for tarotists. They are also the authors of the popular books “The Secret Language of Tarot” and “Tarot Tips“. In addition to all of this, they host THE tarot event of the year: The Reader’s Studio, where tarot readers from all over the globe converge to meet and greet and polish their tarot skills. Due to their efforts, tarot has continued to grow and evolve – and those who want to learn tarot have a reliable and trusted resource that they can access easily. The Amberstones have taken tarot out of the dark ages and into the light of modern day.
This tireless duo considers themselves to be “lifelong students”. I consider them to be an inspiration to every tarot reader.
Read their answers to my questions below:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. What is your philosophy about tarot reading?
Tarot reading for us is the final stage of a lifelong contemplation of tarot as a picture of what it means to be human. Every reading we do reflects what we have learned about tarot and about people to that moment.
2. Tell me about The Tarot School: your vision, what you offer and how you support your students.
We see tarot as a bottomless well of human understanding. The Tarot School was created to offer students a place to study tarot as long and as deeply as they wish.
We serve this purpose through classes and intensives — both in person and on the phone — correspondence and audio courses, books, our Tarot Tips newsletter and Readers Studio conference. Each format approaches tarot from a different perspective.
We support our students by continuing to learn in order to continue to create and teach, and by always being there for our students when they come to us.
3. You’ve been doing the Readers Studio for years now. Please tell my readers about what the Readers Studio offers for the tarot community.
The Readers Studio is a place for the scattered worldwide tarot community to come together once a year and celebrate their passion. It’s a place and time to learn, to talk and to play in an atmosphere of total immersion and high energy, and to continuously add to the unique community of which we all are a part.
A special and distinguishing quality of The Readers Studio is that everyone learns together as a community, compared to the usual conference model where everyone disperses to separate simultaneous tracks. It’s also a creative incubator and great place to network. New tarot books, decks, radio shows and more have been born out of the Readers Studio experience.
4. You have both been a “staple” in the tarot community for years. What do you see for the future of tarot?
Although it stands firmly on the foundation of its past and its tradition, modern tarot is moving inexorably toward rationalizing, professionalizing and deepening its knowledge base and practice. It is now, and will become continuously more, a connected worldwide community rather than a universe of individual readers and separate esoteric communities.
