Talkin' Tarot with Bere Parra

Talkin’ Tarot With is a monthly feature designed to introduce my readers to different tarot readers from our wonderfully diverse community! Each month, I’ll be asking various tarot readers three questions about their tarot philosophy and style, plus pointing you to their websites and blogs so that you can learn more about them! I like to hand pick tarot readers that I feel are talented and interesting.

Thanks to the internet, I get to meet some mighty interesting tarot folks. Some of those people become friends. Bere Parra is one of them. Bere is a Mexican theistic satanic witch living in Guanajuato, Mexico. We connected a few years ago on Twitter and over the years have developed a lovely friendship. Although we walk different paths and live far from each other, we share a lot of things, namely the love of David Bowie and Tarot. Plus, she’s got a wicked wit, which I adore.

A few weeks ago, Bere was my guest on Tarot Bytes to chat about the Left-Hand Path. I’ve always been curious about how a Satanist might approach Tarot – and apparently, other people were too. Of all the episodes I did last year, this one seemed to generate a bit of attention – and not the negative kind. I got emails and private messages from people who were grateful to hear Bere talk about this subject so beautifully. A few curious types told me that it “opened their minds.” It opened mine too. I’m looking at the whole Left-Hand Path with an informed mind – and I think Bere is going to help more folks do the same.

Bere Parra is a Mexican theistic satanic witch residing in Guanajuato, Mexico. She majored in Hispanic Literature. She has an innate strong connection and interest in the occult practices, which led to her ‘coming out of the broom closet’ in 2018. She mainly works with Satan, whom she considers her father figure and main guiding light, but she often works with the ad and blessing of Lilith and the lady Moon. Q: What is your philosophy about tarot reading?

Bere: Tarot is as much a divination method as it is a tool for self-knowledge and even self-healing. It is no coincidence that it is presented as a game of cards: this ludic approach is the same one that should be adopted when it comes to life and the universe. It’s not that tarot (or life) should always be taken lightly or approached without seriousness. In my life, whenever I adopt the perspective of ‘playing the game’ with the intention of, if not winning, then at least having fun with it; I always win no matter what. It’s the same with a tarot reading: you always come out wiser, even when you don’t end up in first place or when you don’t ‘get’ the cards you wanted. In this way, when a reading features some cards that point to difficulties or challenges, I always frame them as useful notices or warnings, rather than as an ‘ill omens’. The cards also bring to the surface the facts or truths we have been sweeping under the rug, so that we can take ownership of our shortcomings.

Q: How do you feel a client might get the most out of a reading with you?

Bere: By having a clear, no bs approach to the topic they want to explore. It’s always best when you sort at least some of the stuff out within yourself in advance so that in the end you are able to come up with a simple, honest question (or series of questions) that you want answered. This entails carrying out a duty to yourself: to contemplate the possibility that the answers might not be those you would like to get. This way, you can dust the spiderwebs off your mind and pave the way for an effective reading.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for an aspiring Tarot reader?

Bere: While it is important to research and read about the history, interpretation, and use of tarot and other oracles, you should try not to get stuck in the theory. I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to start ‘playing’ with your deck from the moment you lay your hands on it! Try different spreads and come up with your own while you’re learning the meanings of each card. It’s great to pair reading/learning with actually USING your tarot deck, as that will allow for a more effective learning of all the meanings and best uses. I’m not saying you should start doing readings for others (or charging for it!) right off-the-bat, but you should definitely get on friendly terms with your deck straight away.
