Talkin’ Tarot With is a monthly feature designed to introduce my readers to different tarot readers from our wonderfully diverse community! Bio:

Angela Mary is a Magick maker, Tarot reader, mother of teens and lover in her native Orange County California. The middle child of a family of nine children, she grew up in a very humble, creative household. Raised on holy water kept in the home and LP records on the turntable, she had a lot of time to cloud watch and moon-gaze. There was a big organic garden in her backyard and often Catholic mass was held in her childhood living room.

From just a baby, Mother Mary beckoned her into her bosom and the bespoke coven that became, in the words of Adrienne Rich, her ‘rose-wet cave’ and safe haven. There from the start, her clairsentient and psychic abilities helped her navigate the rickety bridge created by childhood trauma. Everything is a Spell…and tiny Altars were her second nature and fecund ground for her earliest Spellbound Rites. Angela babysat from a young age in the 70’s and one of her early babysitting gigs had copies of the iconic Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs and Linda Goodman’s Love Signs. Bit by the bug of all beautiful Magickal things – she was hooked, line and sinker.

As a young teenager in the 80’s she worked in a bookstore where she encountered her first Tarot deck which she began to transcribe by hand because she couldn’t afford to buy it. Angela became a teenage cosmetologist in 1984 and in 1986, at 20 years old, a Salon owner, for thirteen Magickal years. Working in a creative field from a very young age gave her the natural freedom to continue to explore her Spirituality. The deep relationship with clients developed her desire to help and serve folx not just on the surface level with their beauty adornments and treatments, but on the emotional and spiritual level, as well. When client’s hair color was processing there would often be oracle card readings and deep intuitive sharing (think super 80’s witchy Steel Magnolias). Her beloved Tarot came roaring back into her flesh before work one day, she asked one of her employee sister-witches to read her Tarot cards. Her friend said “no I don’t read for anyone, but you can borrow my deck and read for yourself” and just like that, a Tarot reader was born. She has never parted from her Tarot practice for a single day since.

Q: What is your philosophy about tarot reading?

Angela Mary: Tarot is alive! As with all living beings my duty is to not objectify in order to dominate or control life. Nurturing and caring for Tarot as a living energetic field is part of my daily practice. We definitely affect change on all the things we encounter in our grand Web of Life. My hands are my hearts messenger and as a Tarot reader the sacred exchange of energy that I have when throwing a Tarot spread is an honor and that sacred honor is the cornerstone of my practice.

Tarot is also Magick and Magick is fun. There is a wondrous pas de deux that takes place when my energy field and the Tarot energy field dovetail together. Everything is a Spell – my job is to be fiercely intentional in my heart as this Spell is emerging in all my words and deeds. Tarot is also a mirror and will reflect back to us our most unencumbered truths.

I have a Libra sun and justice is at the core of my being. Because I am in a white body, as a Tarot reader it is radically essential for me to be in a constant deep knowing that racism and cultural appropriation are woven into the very fabric of my ancestral colonialization of our planet. Tarot gives me the permission, safe space and language to be in a visceral dance with healing the traumas of my clients AND the trauma inflicted on our shared Mother Earth. Tarot is having SUCH a moment. She has literally always been here for me and in her big moment I am here for her. Like a metronome I vow to constantly keep time which creates healing rhythms in the work Tarot and I do together.

Q: How do you feel a client might get the most out of a reading with you?

Angela Mary: Be ready to enter the Tarot space and your inner knowings, through your body. Embodiment of Magickal visions gives us the tangible experience of physically moving our dreams further into existence. We shuffle cards and lay them on our altar cloths like so many stars on a celestial map. Then deep dive towards the heavenly body of our desires.

Look, in my witchery I believe so fully in the embodiment of the path of pleasure. Does that mean my goal is to be in a constant state of bliss or else I consider my work or life a failure? Fuck no! I believe that life has obstacles, struggles and traumas. These realities are so often placed upon us by others and our pleasure moves in liquid form around these markers. This nectar shapes, quilts, cobbles and heals the scar tissue into majestic beautiful living art. I encourage my clients on the day of their reading to 100% take the day off of talking shit to themselves. Taking the day off of inner criticism is an extremely radical act for most of us. When we remove the stress of critical language to our inner child we must put something in its place, lest we lose the ability to water the seeds of our hope. This is where the path of pleasure comes in.

My clients need to enter the sacred space of Tarot as close to the Fool as possible; fearless, wild and free. Very simple ways of increasing pleasure, to take the place of inner criticism, is through our body. I begin all my Tarot sessions with a real live Witches brew. This warm herbal drink is so heavily curated that it makes me actually cackle when I muse on the process involved with the making of this potion. My client strikes a wooden match and lights a candle to beckon their guardians and guides. We settle into session utilizing a grounding exercise with verbal cues that my client and I experience together.

I give prompts to comfort my client but you may do this for yourself in moments where you begin to feel inner criticism crowding out your Magick and optimism, not just at your Tarot session. I say to my client, variations of: “love yourself from head to toe…feel energy crack like an egg on the top of your head and begin to descend down your forehead and gather at your third eye, let your eyes float in their sockets, release your jaw, relax your tongue, drop your shoulders, soften your back, melt your energy down your spine, release your pelvic floor and sacred sacrum, make liquid your legs and let the energy slither into your feet, sprout this healing calming energy out the tips of your toes allowing the energy to pierce and enter the soft ground of Mother Earth and attach and entwine through the crystalline, liquid lava, and mysterious layers of her body which is your body.” If this meditation is not within your comfort zone, then try chocolate and orgasms.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for an aspiring Tarot reader?

Angela Mary: I’ll keep this extremely brief and put a fine point on it. Gentle reader, develop your own methods within your Tarot practice or you will be seen. You have chosen to enter into a field with highly clairsentient, extremely psychic and wildly potent company. This is not a casual affair. There are oceans upon oceans of teaching materials for the fantastic healing modality of Tarot but not many people will tell you this straight your face; if you can’t keep a secret take a walk now. What we see, hear and encounter in session is sacred and I consider it contractual to keep to myself. Be awake to temporal boundaries; your craft will need seasons to blossom…
