“If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” ~ Henry Ford
Do you assume that you can’t learn new things?
Do you hold back in your business because you can’t do certain things well such as blogging?
Do you secretly believe that everyone else is way more ahead of you because they are more talented or smarter than you?
Can’t is a powerful word.
While we can all accept that there are certain things we can’t do (I cannot swim – at all), many times, especially in business, we can learn.
When I put up my website so many moons ago, one of the things I told myself was that I couldn’t write. I agonized over every blog post and horoscope that I put up there.
And the worse part? I was busy comparing myself. Not to other bloggers but to my family. Namely, my husband and daughter, who are both wonderful writers. It didn’t matter that they both write fiction, I was stressing out over sounding “dumb”.
My daughter has an MFA and attended an incredible school for her master’s program. And me?
I had no degree to speak of. And certainly not any formal training for my writing.
Despite all my anxiety about my lack of writing education, I dove in and did it anyways. In time, I got better and less uptight. I was no longer seeking perfection, I was just writing.
I stopped judging myself or comparing my talents to anyone else. I just wrote. And wrote. And wrote some more.
I took some online classes and continued to write.
My blog is now prolific. In fact, my gal who catalogues my blog for me was stunned with how many entries I have loaded up over the years.
My new can’t is that I can’t stop writing.
The next time, you find yourself letting can’t get in the way of your work, sit with it. Then, do it anyways. Take that first step. Seek help if you need to. And keep at it. In time, you may just surprise yourself when you discover that you really CAN.
Blessings,
Theresa
