When you want to connect with a peer or someone you’d like to partner up with, how do you approach them?

Do you cold-call them?

Picture this: “Ring ring. Hello, RuPaul? Hey, you don’t know me but I’d love to be a judge on Drag Race. Let’s make that happen, pronto.”

Would you do that?

Probably not.

But would you do this:

“Hey _________.  Nice blog.  Could you:

  1. promote my Kickstarter campaign
  2. interview me on your popular blog
  3. invite me to speak at your event
  4. make me an affiliate (even though I don’t own your product)
  5. be an affiliate for my program (even though you don’t own my product)
  6. link to my site
  7. let me use your work on my site (I want your audience in my world).
  8. etc etc etc.

Sincerely, Person You Don’t Know From Adam”

This happens all the time. I’ve had it happen and I’ve talked with others that have too.

Some people mean well and perhaps they’ve been schooled to “reach out” like that.

But that vibe smacks of someone who is only concerned with what’s in it for them.

Here’s a better tactic: make genuine connections FIRST before you put in a big ask.  And even better: only do that if you are sincerely interested in their work, not just raiding their client list.  This is a healthy and heart-centered way to partner up with people.

Don’t act like a business vampire.  Be a true friend first. Get to know people and they may just want to get to know your business and work with you (not for you).

Blessings!
