when you don't feel inspired

You sit at the keyboard…but nothing comes.  You sit some more, staring blankly at the screen.  Crickets.

So you scope out the news and perhaps check in on what’s happening over at Facebook.  You might even get caught up reading Game of Thrones spoilers (ahem…guilty as charged).  Then you notice an hour has gone by and nothing is done.

Sound like you?

If your muse tends to be fickle, you might find yourself going through long, frustrating creative dry spells where not much happens – except a whole lotta getting distracted by other nonsense.  That’s a recipe for a stagnant business.

Hear this: inspiration is everywhere.

That may seem impossible but it’s true.  Watching birds hitting that bird feeder?  Ideas about marketing.  Read a story about something that outrages you?  A blog post is born!

Look around you.  You have plenty of interesting stories and endless sources of creative fodder too.  You have a creative well that you can nourish and dip into any time you want or need to.  It’s there, waiting for your attention. It needs your attention.

I’m an inquisitive gal so I tend to be aware of everything going on around me and within me.  Being bored is rarely a problem.  But even I have my humdrum moments where I have to prod my muse into action.  On those days, here are some of the things I might do to get the creativity show on the road:

  1. Read lots o’ magazines.  I subscribe to a lot of ‘em.  Magazines are fab resources for information, great pics, and interesting people.
  2. Keep up on current events. I read the news every morning just to see what’s happening in the world.
  3. See a good movie.
  4. Go to a museum.
  5. Take a trip.  Travel is a good cure for the doldrums!
  6. Spend time with interesting people.
  7. Meditate.  This is my favorite way to come up with creative ideas.  Yoga nidra is my creative elixir!
  8. Listen to music – particularly new music.  I subscribe to Apple streaming music so that I can check out loads of new albums and artists.
  9. Head out to nature.  Hug a tree or hike in the woods.  Time spent in fresh air is a wonderful brain cleaner!
  10. Follow great blogs that are NOT related to your industry.  (I rarely read tarot blogs.  Most of the time I’m reading stuff like Paul Jarvis or Racheal Cook.)
  11. Get involved in a good cause.  BE an inspiration.
  12. Check in with your clients.  Where are you needed?  What do they need?  What problems are currently keeping them up at night?  What can you solve?

These mini-suggestions might just spark something but here’s my big secret to constant creative inspiration: stay curious, my friends.

That’s it.

Stay curious + you’ll always remain creative.
