What do you think a successful business looks like?
When you think successful do you picture seven figure incomes, million dollar homes and luxurious vacations sitting on a beach with a Mai Tai cocktail in hand? For some, that’s their reality. It’s probably pretty glam. Or at least it may seem that way.
When you see someone boasting about material success, you may find yourself lusting after the same thing. Or, more likely, feeling inadequate when your stats don’t measure up.
Hear this truth: success doesn’t look the same to everyone. You must define your own terms of success.
For me, those terms are rather modest. I make a great income doing work that I love. I have no credit card debt. Our cars are paid off (and they are late models – 2003). Our home will be paid off in about two years – fifteen years early. That home is almost 100 years old and a labor of love with many more renovations to come.
I don’t put my money into showy things because ostentatious and flashy are not how I roll. I’m not wired to sit on a beach with a cocktail. I would go insane.
My biggest splurge is technology. But that’s because it’s essential to my business. Practical is my middle name.
I don’t give a rat’s ass about SEO, popularity, stats or any of that stuff. I’m more concerned with being creative, useful, and serving my clients.
In my world success is defined as doing my work in peace and serving as many people as I can, plus having financial security, a loving marriage, and two healthy, happy kids. (I might want to add two spoiled cats in there.)
At the end of the day, you need to decide what success looks like for you too. It may be a humongous income and a gas-guzzling Hummer. It may mean bills paid off and money in your IRA. It might be a side hustle that gives you some extra cheddar. It’s all good.
Don’t get caught up in someone else’s fantasy about what success looks like. Instead, create success that makes sense and feels good for you.
Blessings,
Theresa
