What’s your niche?
You have to pick just one.
Ever have coaches tell you that?
I have.
I was in a blogging class once where the teacher asked me who my audience was. When I said mostly women age eighteen to sixty five who were interested in tarot and metaphysical business, she shook her head. “You have to narrow it down. It’s too wide.”
Hmmm….
While I understand the rationale behind that thinking, I have a different perspective. The advice to have a “niche” does not fit all business models. Nor does it need to.
Look, I’m a Gemini. I have a wide range of interests and passions. I’m a Tarot reader, but I also love astrology, cooking, talking business, yoga, pop culture, and music – especially rap. I talk about all this jazz over on my blog.
It’s also how I live.
On any given day, I might be doing tarot readings, teaching a yoga class, or jamming with a business mentoring client. I can juggle all of these without missing a beat. Why? Because I am super-into each of these. I don’t do stuff I don’t dig. But the stuff I love – I bring it with enthusiasm.
Does that confuse people? Perhaps. But the people who get me love the variety and the big assortment of goodies I offer.
I attract a wide range of seekers. And that’s how I roll.
Another blogger who follows the same unconventional path is Emilie Wapnick of Puttylike. She coined a term for people like us: multipotentialite – a person who combines many passions. I heart that. (PS I also highly recommend her site if you are like me and worried that you have too many interests to be successful.)
You can find a small niche and work it. Or you might find that you have more than one. In fact, you may have a whole slew of ‘em.
You can make it work. You can find consistency within a bunch of interests and skills.
How?
No matter what you are doing at any given time, do a damn good job, take great care of your clients, and be reliable as hell.
That will trump the need for a teeny-tiny speciality niche.
Your business should reflect YOU, not some “traditional” business model of success that worked for someone else.
Carry on and enjoy yourself,
Theresa
