On occasion, my day starts like this:
An email arrives from someone I don’t know. They are in the same biz and wanted to reach out…to ask me to support their crowdfunding campaign.
On other occasions, it goes like this:
A person that I casually know asks me to help promote their new thing. I agree. Then, I never hear from them again unless they “need” something.
I understand the wisdom of reaching out to your peers to help bolster your business or new product but really? If this was a romantic situation, it would feel like a thankless “booty call.”
If you want to feel good about enlisting the help of your peers, take this strategy instead: develop REAL relationships with them.
That means taking the time to get to know them.
Talking with them.
Endorsing their work to your audience.
Being authentically interested in their world.
Saying thank you – even if they decline to help you.
Is that hard?
No.
A soulful business owner isn’t one who only shows up when they want something. They actually give a damn about their clients and their colleagues.
The next time you are tempted to Google names of people who are in your industry or reach out to that person you barely say two words to, stop. Don’t be a business user. Be a real business friend instead.
I guarantee that you’ll get more enthusiastic support if you follow that path.
Blessings,
Theresa
