The conventional business wisdom is to plan for growth. But I’m not a conventional gal so I rarely follow the advice that so many biz people like to put out there. Instead, I like to march to the beat of my own tarotpreneur drum – which is often counterintuitive. Or at least it seems that way to those who don’t know me well.
For example, there is a lot of chatter about “growth” and hiring big teams. Go bigger, badder, better! BE HUGE.
While the idea of that may seem to make sense (bigger biz, more cashola), it doesn’t make a lick of sense for my business.
I’m a one woman operation and frankly, I like it that way. For one, it allows me to keep a tight rein on things. Yes, my family says I’m a control freak and I have to agree: they are right. I don’t like to leave my business in anyone’s hands but my own. Also, I like to keep as many of the profits in my pocket as possible. Hiring a team means paying that team. I’d rather pay myself.
At this time, I’m at full capacity. Which means I have a choice: I can grow and burn out or hire a team to handle some stuff. Or I can scale back and create breathing room.
I chose the latter.
I’ve taken down the email tarot readings button for a month. I’ve removed the business mentoring services for a bit (it’s getting reworked into something fabulous). The digital shop is getting decluttered to make way for new stuff.
In other words, I am scaling back so that I have breathing room. Room to write a new book, time to chill out after a year of heavy travel, space to create things that have been begging for my attention.
It also means taking a step back to reevaluate what I love doing…and what I don’t love.
All of this means less bread on the table but in my world, it’s never about the money. Don’t get me wrong, I love cash. But peace and love always trump that. Scaling down a bit allows me to get in touch with my heart – so that I can continue to serve with love and harmony.
Growth is great. But if you are growing at such a pace that your business is running you rather than the other way around, I invite you to consider pulling back too. Take a business sabbatical and see where that leads you.
You might be pleasantly surprised.
Blessings,
Theresa
