glass-half-full

There is one phrase that will sabotage your ability to be content every single time.

“If only…..”

It often follows this formula:

If only I _____________, then I’d be happy.

Examples:

If only I had a relationship, then I’d be happy.

If only I could find a new job, then I’d be happy.

If only my ex would come back, then I’d be happy.

If only I lived in a warmer climate, then I’d be happy.

I hear this phrase from time to time in my work.  A client may have a perfectly positive life (and a reading that reflects that back to them), but they’ll start the “if only” talk and suddenly the energy in the room (and their voice) turns sour.

That glass half full mantra is chock full o’ bummer.

“If only” keeps you from seeing the wondrous gifts in front of you.

It prevents you from feeling satisfied with what you have.

It keeps you locked in the past or longing for the future.

It takes you out of the present moment and puts all the responsibility for your happiness on a different situation than the one you have right now.

Want to change that negative talk?  Chant this instead:

Although I _______________ yet, I choose to be happy and content right now.

Examples:

Although I have not met the right person yet, I choose to be happy and content right now.

Although I have not found the job I really want yet, I choose to be happy and content right now.

Although I am not living in a warmer climate yet, I choose to be happy and content right now.

Yet says that the possibility for what you want is still open.  Adding in the “I choose to be happy and content right now” empowers you and reminds you to be present moment oriented.

When you change your lingo and point of view around a situation, you create the energy necessary for a big shift.

The next time you are killing your own joy by focusing on what you don’t have, start playing around with new affirmations that get you right here, right now, and right thinking.

“What you habitually think largely determines what you will ultimately become.” ~ Bruce Lee
