Many years ago, I was agitated about a situation. Naturally, I turned to tarot! I shuffled the cards, laid them out, and began to interpret. However, I wasn’t satisfied with the answer. It wasn’t clear enough, I said. The truth was: I didn’t like the answer. I did a few more readings on the topic and ended up with a clusterfuck of conflicting answers.
Now, I was more confused than ever.
Needless to say, the first reading turned out to be correct. Sigh. I should have stopped right then and there! Lesson learned!
Over the years, I’ve had this experience with many clients. They would ask the same question over and over. Sometimes, they would reframe the question or ask it from a different angle. Perhaps they assumed this would give them a different answer (the one they wanted).
If you ever want to make a tarot reader grumpy – that’s how to do it. My cards never liked that approach, and eventually, I would get pissy. Tarot doesn’t like obsession – and neither do I. It’s not healthy.
So, a fair question would be: how many times can you ask tarot the same question?
In my opinion and experience, it’s best to ask the question once – then let it be and see how things shake out. Otherwise, you’re hammering away and creating an unhealthy relationship with tarot.
One of my favorite practices: ask a question, pull a few cards, and write your initial thoughts in a journal. Then: leave the question alone for a week or more. Come back to it and jot down additional insights. If you still feel unclear, ask the question again.
Stop asking after that. Don’t be a tarot pest.
I have come across folks who will go from reader to reader to reader to ask the same question. I’ve also witnessed people doing the same thing on social media (watch TikTok readers, and you’ll see some of the same people jumping around and asking the same question). That’s a surefire way to get mixed tarot messages – and, in the case of paid readings, waste a lot of dough. While there is nothing wrong with wanting a second opinion, it’s better to find a reader you trust and stick with them, even if you don’t like the answer!
Lastly, if you’re obsessing over a situation, that’s not always the best time to throw cards. Instead, it might be an issue better worked on with a licensed therapist. I’ve found that to be a far more effective approach when my anxiety is causing me to future trip.
