Every so often, I like to grab a tarot card and examine it closely. As I scan the card, I look for the “not so obvious” parts of the image and use that as a focal point for creative interpretations.
For example (using the Rider Waite deck):
Nine of Swords – normally, the figure sitting up in bed grabs your attention! But if you look closely, you’ll notice that there is little scene carved in the bed that almost looks like someone is being attacked. One of the images seems to be pleading. In a reading, this could represent “feeling attacked, seeking mercy.”
Six of Cups – forget the lovebirds in the garden – instead, check out the man walking away. This may indicate leaving a love triangle situation. Or perhaps he’s returning to the watchtower in the background – the interpretation might be: “a protected community; safety.” (I might also start examining that watchtower and begin to imagine what’s going on in there. This could lead to an interpretation such as “something is under lock and key.”)
Try it. Pick a card and inspect it carefully. Notice something that catches your eye. Something in the background perhaps. Maybe it’s the mountain through the gateway in the Ace of Pentacles. Or the halo around the Hanged Man’s head (or maybe you’re wondering what’s behind his back – are his hands bound or not?). Let that become a prompt for a new insight. Be curious.
(Although, I like mining for my own interpretations, I also recommend checking out The Secret Language of Tarot by Ruth Ann and Wald Amberstone. This book has some pretty detailed information about some of the hidden symbols and their meanings!)
Blessings!
Theresa
