One of my strange fascinations is Victorian postcards and calling cards with animals in various human predicaments. There is something about a cat in clothes or a frog on ice skates that gets me all jolly. I think I started developing this predilection because I grew up in an old home with older parents (Dad would be turning 100 next year).
They used to get a magazine called “The Good Old Days,” which had stories, recipes and pictures from the turn of the century. I would pore through that magazine for hours, looking for proof that those old days were really good. Often, the stories were a bit depressing (hey, to be fair most of it was written from the perspective of people living during the Great Depression). The only proof that my child brain could find was the cheaper candy and toys.
As I now enter the age my father was when I was born, I do find myself thinking about my so-called “good old days.” I reminisce about when rock stars looked like bona fide rock stars, when Mountain Dew had real sugar and a hillbilly on the bottle, and when pizza rolls actually tasted good (they never did but to a kid, they were a treat). When my kids talk about the 80’s as “retro” or “antique,” I laugh and shake my head. Kids. What do they know?
While I do have a fondness for some of that old stuff, I will say this: I DO prefer THIS time. Modern technology has made my life way better. I don’t miss cassette tapes or black and white television (Game of Thrones looks so much better on my HD tv). And I certainly don’t miss being a kid. I like now very much. The good old days…not as great as some of us try to make you believe. Enjoy the good NOW days because they are all that matter.
