before you begin the tarot reading

You’ve meditated and cleared the energy in your office with a quick wave of the sage wand. A lovely lavender candle lights up your office with a warm glow.  New age music wafts through the air, creating the perfect melodic backdrop (and drowning out the traffic  jam outside). You’ve got your favorite mood ring on and it says “groovy”.  It’s tarot time!

Then your client rushes in, apologizes for being a few minutes late and sits down at the tarot table.  She’s nervously rifling through her purse, searching for her list of questions.  More apologies.  She finds it and smiles with anticipation.

You’ve waited patiently and you’re ready to begin shuffling.

BUT hold on a minute…what about the client?

Although you’ve taken the time to get your energetic self in divine order, your client may have just driven through that horrific traffic jam only to struggle for a parking spot.  And this might be after a stressed-out day at the office.

In other words, you and your client are not in the same head space.

You’re Zen…but them? I don’t think so.

For a tarot reading to be effective, both reader and client need to be grounded.

Which means you need to create a moment for your client to find their center before you even think of tossing those cards.

Fortunately, it’s not hard to do and only takes a minute.

Setting a peaceful atmosphere is one way to help your client relax but I also recommend having some sort of small centering ritual before you being reading.

I start every reading with an oracle card from The Power Deck: The Cards of Wisdom.  Each card has a different spiritual message on the back.  If a client is in the office, I allow them to pull one and read the back to themselves.  If I am doing a phone reading, I close my eyes, pick the card and then read the message to them.

This gives us both a moment for a sacred pause before we get to work

You might choose this method (perhaps with another deck of your liking) or you may have another little practice that sets the tone: a short prayer, ring a bell, a moment of silence or breathing in sync, or even pouring a cup of tea (one of my favorite readers does this and I think it’s genius).

It doesn’t matter what sort of opening ceremony you choose to use but just do something that sends a message that the outside world is…outside and the sacred work is about to begin.

Once that tone has been established…read your heart out!

There are many other ways to get your client “in the mood”.  What is your favorite method?  Share your client grounding rituals with me on Twitter @thetarotlady
