the hit list things change

We hadn’t been to California in two years.  Normally, we visit San Francisco every year. But last year was not an ordinary one and I had a lot of business travel…so we missed our annual date.

Believe me, a lot can happen in that time.

Some of our favorite haunts were closed. Gone. Other places we planned to visit also vanished, never ever to be experienced.  Too late for that.

Places that I assumed wouldn’t make it evolved and thrived.  And new hot spots opened up that blew us away.

Even the staples, those places that seem never destined to close, were different yet the same. Same yet different.

I lived and loved in New York many years ago.  This was during a time of upheaval and riots and gentrification.  I left and didn’t come back for many years.

When I returned, an ex asked me: how does it feel?

My reply: eerily safe.

It was cleaner.  Sanitary.  More expensive.  The parks were full of children and families.  Where did the homeless go?  (Back in my day, the problem was so rampant, they built a “tent city” in the local park.)  I missed some of the sleaze.  It was still there but different.  The same but different.  Different but the same.  Nope, definitely different.

My daughter has been gone since November, teaching in Spain and bumming around the world like a very good bon vivant.  We talked often and she had a new maturity in her voice.  Europe might be good for her, I thought.  It was good for me because time apart does make the heart grow fonder (Or so they say.  I prefer to have my kidlets close.).

She just came home for a visit and I anticipated her return.

Would she be different?  More grown up?  A taller, brighter version of herself?

She walked in the door and although she had a bit of a Euro-flair to her style, she was the same little girl that cuddled with kittens and laughed about fart jokes.

She was different but the same. Same but different.

As life goes on and time passes, we change.  I still feel the same that I felt when I was thirty.  I have the same beliefs. The same career.  The same hairdo and style (which might be cause for alarm for my more fashion-forward daughter and sister).

But I’m fifty.

I’m the same but different. Different but the same.

How might I feel in five years?  In ten?  In twenty when I begin to get serious about retiring?

Will I be different? Or the same?  Or the same difference?

Only time will tell how different I look and feel and think.  But it may be all the same…just different.
