I bought an adorable pair of leopard print shoes a while back. They were chic and looked great peeking under my jeans.  I couldn’t wait to wear them.

So I did.

And they really hurt my feet.  Although I bought the correct size, there was something about the fit that just wasn’t right for me.  Disappointed, the shoes went to the back of my closet.

I wasn’t mad at the shoemaker. I knew that I probably should have spent more time getting to know those shoes before I bought them.

In business, every one of us is, at one time or another, going to experience that – a client that isn’t a good fit.  When a relationship meshes, it’s quite lovely.  It makes your work joyful for you and the client.

But when the vibe isn’t right, it’s like those ill fitting leopard print shoes – a bummer, and, in some cases, a bit painful.

So how can you prevent this from happening?  And what can you do if a relationship just isn’t working?

The key to working with your right clients is clarity upfront.  Which means being ultra-transparent on what your personality is all about, what you offer, what people you like to work with, and how much you charge.  You also need to state your limitations, ethics, and every single policy you may have.  This needs to be front and center so that potential clients know exactly what they are getting.

When you state it out loud, you’re creating educated consumers who can then decide if they want to – or don’t want to – do business with you.

I also recommend having a list of referrals handy at all times.  This will allow you to refer people to the best person to serve their needs.  For example, I don’t do “emergency” tarot readings or same day service – but I have a list of colleagues who do. I am always happy to refer people to the right person for the job.

You should be too.

It’s important to trust your gut too.  If you’re getting a strange vibe from someone, don’t ignore it.  I’ve had people reach out to me who just didn’t feel “right.”  I couldn’t put my finger on it but I knew something was off.  In those cases, I referred them to other people rather than try to power through that vibe.

On occasion, you may end up with a client who isn’t happy with your services – or who may just not dig your style.  If you’ve done your best to serve them, don’t take this personally.  You’re not going to please everyone even when you give it your all.  Apologize, refer them to other sources, bless them, and send them on their way. (Psst…some people also cannot be pleased by anyone.)

It’s like the shoe analogy – while the leopard prints were certainly nice to look at, ultimately, I’m back to my comfy old Birkenstocks.  Because that’s what fits me the best.

Blessings,

Theresa
