soul proprietor

With a book at the printers, I’m now beginning to plan for upcoming lectures and workshops.  I’m also no stranger to the main stage any longer.

After successful gigs at the World Domination Summit (this will be my second year in a row) and The Reader’s Studio, I’m moving from public speaking newbie to seasoned pro.

Perhaps you’re thinking of grabbing the mic one day.  Maybe you already are.  If that sounds like you, you’ll want to begin learning how to write and deliver a powerful presentation.  My favorite go-to expert in all things speech-related is none other than Dr. Michelle Mazur, author of Speak Up For Your Business and her newest book, Speak For Impact: Write A Speech That’s Your Next Best-Selling Product.

I’ve relied on her work to fine tune my public speaking skills – and I’m delighted that she has sent me a list of tips to share with you!

  • Realize your speech is not just a speech. Although most speaking experts tell you to share your soul-stirring story, that’s not enough to create revenue with speaking. Instead take your story, your experience, and your expertise and package it in a way that is meaningful to your audience and gives organizations and conferences a reason to hire you to speak.
  • To be a profitable speaker, you must have a plan on how to make money speaking. You can’t just hope for a big break, but you need a speech that aligns with a path to revenue.
  • The audience is the star of your speech, and to build your speech like a product you’ve got to deliver a specific result to the audience that solves a challenge they face.
  • Know how you’re different from all the other speakers on your topic. Positioning is key in being a successful speaker.
  • When you’ve written your speech, it’s time to pitch. Don’t be a pitchhole and spam anyone and everyone who is looking for a speaker instead start with your network. The easiest way to land speaking gigs is to pitch people who already know you.

Those are some fantastic (and helpful) tips!
